S1E11 - Presidential Oligarchs

Every president has had a cabal -- I mean cabinet -- of officials who lead the bureaucracy. Today, we look at some of Biden's top officials.

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

From Washington to today, every president has had cabinet, a group of official policy advisors to the Oval Office. These officials are often personally responsible for implementing major programs that can either protect or hurt liberty. Today, we're examining some of Joe Biden's top picks for his cabinet, from the Department of Justice all the way to the Department of Health and Human Services.

S1E10 - RIP: Riots, Ideas, and Politics

Well, it's been an interesting beginning to 2021, hasn't it? With President Biden's inauguration, we see the ending of the transition of power. We're finally ready to give our thoughts on the election, the Capitol riots, and the essence of free speech.

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

Joe Biden's inauguration caps a wild election year and beginning to 2020, but it most certainly will not be the end of anti-freedom shenanigans. In today's episode, we explore what is going on with the Republicans in the deep south, and wonder if the US is categorically shifting to the left. We rip apart the LARPing rioters at the Capitol on January 6th but worry about civil liberty violations that could be coming from this. And finally, we take some time to figure out the insane response to these riots, from state cultists decrying the sanctity of Congress to Big Tech's influence on free speech.

And for our 10th episode, we introduce Shout Outs to those we want to highlight or thank. Enjoy!

S1E9 - Liberty on Lockdown

Legalities, Rome, and tar abound in this episode. What do we do about the government lockdowns?

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought about the greatest onslaught of government regulations in modern history. Local governments ordering the closures of businesses, governors limiting capacity in churches, and the economic control of major industry -- these are the tools bureaucrats and politicians are using to strike at the heart of liberty. Which makes us wonder -- where do these local officials get the power to do all this? Join us as we explore the legalities behind these orders, the lawsuits against them, the fundamental principles at play, and what can be done to change.

S1E8 - History Edition, Revised

History is a fascinating study, and when done properly, can reveal great truths of human nature and our collective story. When done poorly, or with deliberate intentions, it can spell key danger to the ideas and principles of the liberty we so cherish.

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

History is an important study for not simply understanding what happened in the past, but for making sense of our current day. But it's not as simple as looking at a record of events. History is written by historians, fallible as any of us, and written using only the evidence that has survived to this day. Figuring out the human story requires a continual search for evidence of what has been lost and making sure we account for the inherent biases in our interpretive lenses. When we don't, we risk ignoring key truths and undermining the very principles that give rise to personal liberty, such as what has happened throughout all of modern academia, media, and even business.

S1E7 - Bread and Circus

Since the days of the Roman Empire, politicians have promised their people anything they desired. In doing so, they could cover up their incompetency and foolish plans. Are we so different today? Find out in a shorter episode of SEF.

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

Since at least the Roman Empire, politicians and leaders have promised their people anything they want to hear. Food, roads, entertainment, you name it. It's a tactic that has been used to cover up mistakes, foolishness, or undesirable plans. And we here at SEF asked ourselves, are our presidential elections just bread and circus politics, the same kind used by emperors of antiquity? Because if it is, then we have a serious problem for liberty. Join us for a shorter episode of Self-Evident and Forgotten!

S1E6 - SCOTUS: RBG and ACB

Acronyms abound in this episode as we discuss the Supreme Court and the ideas behind those who have passed and those who may come to serve.

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

27-year associate justice of the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently passed away, and President Trump has nominated 7th Circuit Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the position. Her nomination is going to be met by a tough Senate hearing committee, and the general public who is so remarkably split on how the Court should function. Today, we dive into the different types of judicial philosophy, the political rancor of Senate hearings, a bit about RBG and ACB, and how this is all pertinent to liberty.

S1E5 - Property (Shmoperty?)

Do you have unelected bureaucrats dictating how you can use your property? Are taxation authorities selling your land for profit? You may be the victim of crisis management government or fascism. Stay tuned to see how you might be compensated.

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

We often forget just how essential property is to our lives. More than just material possessions, property is the byproduct of our most human activity: creation. Property isn't just owned by us, or come from us. We are our own property, and when governments seek to restrict your use of it or control it, it borders on bureaucratic fascism. Today we take a crack that most fundamental human right. Also, we contemplate if the French Revolution could have been saved.

S1E4 - Is the Bill of Rights Good for Liberty?

Many Founding Fathers, including the author of the Bill of Rights, thought they would be a danger to the longevity of personal freedom. Were they right, or just a little paranoid?

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

In today's episode we dive into something we touched upon a couple of episodes ago. James Madison and other Federalists argued that writing down the natural rights the government was obligated to protect would create a dangerous precedent. The danger? By writing it down, you limit the right, and you create a culture that says you only have a right if it's written down. We see how strong that argument really is, only here on Self Evident and Forgotten.

S1E3 - To Separate, Or Not to Separate

The Framers of the Constitution considered the separation of the three powers of government -- executive, legislative, and judicial -- essential to maintaining liberty. But, has it done its job?

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

In today's episode we see if dividing government and setting it against itself actually fulfills the vision of protecting liberty like the Framers wanted it to. Congress legislates, and the president enforces, and the courts judge. But what happens when Congress just gives up and lets both the president and courts legislate for them?

S1E2 - Articles vs. Constitution

Was the Articles of Confederation, our first national charter, better for liberty than the US Constitution?

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

In today's episode we get into whether the Constitution is truly the better liberty-loving document than the much-maligned Articles of Confederation. Really, this comes down to whether you side with the Federalists or Anti-Federalists. Listen to see where we stand!

Quick notes: we had a couple audio issues with volume and some white noise. We're working to settle in to the optimal recording settings, but we appreciate you listening through!
